Knorr-Bremse has entered into a significant partnership with BEML Ltd., India’s state-owned rail and metro coach manufacturer, to supply key system technologies for the nation’s first-ever high-speed trains. This collaboration places Knorr-Bremse at the forefront of a pioneering project that signals a new era for mobility in India. The order for the initial prototype trains was placed in the third quarter of 2025.
Key Highlights
- Knorr-Bremse will equip at least two prototype high-speed trains being manufactured by BEML Ltd.
- The supplied technologies include advanced braking and entrance systems, as well as air conditioning and sanitary systems.
- The contract includes a 15-year service agreement for maintenance, repair, and spare parts supplied by Knorr-Bremse RailServices.
- These new trains are designed for speeds up to 280 km/h and will operate on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad high-speed corridor.
- Deliveries of the system solutions are scheduled to begin in the second quarter of 2026.
A Pioneering Mobility Project
This venture represents a major step forward for transportation in India. The new BEML trains will operate on a 558-kilometer high-speed track currently under construction between Mumbai and Ahmedabad, two of the country’s most important commercial hubs. The project, which includes a 22-kilometer underwater tunnel, is part of a larger mobility initiative aimed at drastically reducing travel times. The success of this corridor may lead to the development of additional high-speed routes, further modernizing India’s rail network.
Dr. Nicolas Lange, a Member of the Executive Board of Knorr-Bremse AG, highlighted the project’s importance, stating, “By equipping the first Indian high-speed trains, we have secured a pioneering mobility project, which we will support with local engineering and development expertise.” This partnership leverages Knorr-Bremse’s global know-how in high-speed applications with its strong local presence.
Scope of the Partnership and Future Potential
Initially, BEML will produce two prototypes for the new train platform. Knorr-Bremse is tasked with providing customer-specific system solutions that ensure safe, comfortable, and sustainable travel. Following the successful deployment of these prototypes, the agreement holds the potential for a subsequent order to equip an additional ten train sets.
The collaboration extends well beyond the initial delivery. While BEML will handle the overall maintenance of the trains, Knorr-Bremse RailServices will provide specialized support for its installed technologies over a 15-year period. This long-term commitment includes maintenance, repairs, and a reliable spare parts supply, ensuring the systems operate at peak performance throughout their lifecycle.
Frank Uder, a member of the management board of Knorr-Bremse Asia Pacific, expressed enthusiasm for the project, noting the successful history of collaboration between the two companies. He emphasized that Knorr-Bremse’s “worldwide know-how in high-speed train applications combined with local engineering excellence” will deliver state-of-the-art solutions for the Indian market.
Commitment to the Indian Market
Knorr-Bremse has been a key player in India’s rail industry for over 30 years, continuously investing in local capabilities. The company operates modern competence centers in Palwal and Pune, along with a recently established global Center for Artificial Intelligence in Chennai. This deep-rooted presence and investment in local innovation underscore Knorr-Bremse’s position as a vital partner in shaping the future of mobility in India. This latest contract solidifies its role in the country’s advancement into the high-speed rail sector.
