Hyundai Motor Group has secured the highest number of safety awards among automotive groups in the 2025 Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) evaluations. The Group earned a total of 21 awards, maintaining its position as the industry leader for the second consecutive year. This total includes 18 TOP SAFETY PICK+ (TSP+) ratings and three TOP SAFETY PICK (TSP) ratings.
Highlights
- Industry Leadership: Hyundai Motor Group secured 21 total awards, the highest among all automotive groups.
- Top-Tier Performance: 18 models achieved the highest TSP+ designation, an increase from 12 models in 2024.
- EV Safety: Flagship electric SUVs, including the IONIQ 9 and Kia EV9, demonstrated top-tier performance.
- Stricter Criteria: Results reflect compliance with the IIHS’s more stringent 2025 evaluation standards.
Analysis of Safety Performance
The 2025 results highlight a significant year-over-year improvement for the Group in achieving the highest safety tier. Of the 21 recognized models, 18 received the TSP+ rating, representing a notable increase from the 12 TSP+ ratings earned in the previous year. This shift indicates successful adaptation to evolving safety requirements.
The awards are distributed across the Group’s three major brands:
- Hyundai Motor Company: Leads all automakers with ten total awards (eight TSP+ and two TSP).
- Genesis: Secured six total awards (five TSP+ and one TSP).
- Kia: Earned five awards, all achieving the highest TSP+ designation.

Electric Vehicle Platform Capabilities
The 2025 evaluations validate the structural integrity of the Electric-Global Modular Platform (E-GMP). This dedicated architecture underpins a growing range of the Group’s electric vehicles and performed consistently well across multiple segments.
Key electric models achieving the TSP+ rating include the 2025 IONIQ 5, IONIQ 6, Genesis GV60, and the new flagship SUVs: the 2026 IONIQ 9 and 2025-26 Kia EV9. These vehicles earned “good” ratings in every applicable crashworthiness and crash-avoidance test, demonstrating the platform’s ability to protect occupants under rigorously updated protocols.
Compliance with 2025 Testing Standards
The IIHS introduced heightened performance thresholds for the 2025 award cycle. To earn the TSP+ rating, vehicles must now meet stricter requirements for second-row occupant protection.
The updated moderate overlap front crash test now incorporates rear-seat dummies representing smaller occupants to better assess injury risks. Qualification for the TSP+ award requires good ratings in the small overlap front, updated moderate overlap front, and updated side tests. Additionally, vehicles must feature acceptable or good-rated headlights as standard equipment and demonstrate effective pedestrian front crash prevention.
