General Motors (GM) has issued Technical Service Bulletin PIT6134E, addressing reports of premature front brake pad wear in specific 2021–2024 models. This issue primarily affects Chevrolet, GMC, and Cadillac vehicles and stems from changes to the brake pad material introduced in mid-2022. GM is actively investigating the situation to develop a lasting solution while advising dealerships and vehicle owners to monitor brake pad life closely.

Key Highlights:

  • Affected Models:
    • Chevrolet: 2021–2024 Silverado 1500, Tahoe, Suburban.
    • GMC: 2021–2024 Sierra 1500, Yukon.
    • Cadillac: 2021–2024 Escalade.
  • Identified Issue: Premature front brake pad wear has been reported, particularly under high-stress driving conditions like mountainous terrain or heavy urban traffic.
  • Cause: A mid-2022 modification to brake pad lining material, aimed at reducing brake noise, has been linked to accelerated wear during high-temperature braking scenarios.
  • Interim Guidance: Technicians are advised to inform customers about potential issues and monitor brake pad life, especially on vehicles built after mid-2022.

The brake pad material update, while effective at reducing noise, has inadvertently led to rapid wear under demanding conditions. Customers have expressed concerns about replacing brake pads after only a few thousand miles. GM has acknowledged the issue, noting that earlier models had better pad life until replacements were made using the updated material.

GM is committed to resolving this matter and is currently investigating potential solutions. The company has not yet provided a specific timeline for a permanent fix but emphasizes the importance of dealer and customer vigilance in the meantime.
