FWMOTO Recalls 1,835 Electric Scooters for Braking Defect

FWMOTO recalls 1,835 FLY-10 electric scooters for brake pad defects that fail FMVSS 122 stopping distance and wet brake performance requirements, offering free replacement or repurchase.

FWMOTO INC. is recalling approximately 1,835 FLY-10 electric motorcycles due to brake pads that fail federal safety standards. The recall affects 2024 FWMOTO FLY-10 and 2022-2024 FLY E-BIKE FLY-10 models equipped with 2000W rear hub motors and 60V or 72V battery systems.

Highlights

  • 1,835 units affected: Recall covers 500 model year 2024 FWMOTO FLY-10 scooters and 1,335 model year 2022-2024 FLY E-BIKE FLY-10 scooters
  • FMVSS 122 noncompliance: Vehicles exceeded maximum stopping distance requirements and failed wet brake performance thresholds
  • Remedy options: Owners will receive free brake pad replacement or full vehicle repurchase
  • Owner notifications: Letters expected to be mailed by March 15, 2026

Defect Details

NHTSA testing revealed the affected vehicles do not comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 122, which governs motorcycle brake systems. At a test speed of 62 km/h, the FLY-10 required 25.54 meters to stop, exceeding the 23.03-meter maximum permitted under the standard.

The vehicles also failed wet brake performance requirements. FMVSS 122 mandates that wet brake deceleration must reach at least 60 percent of baseline dry performance. Testing recorded only 50.38 percent of baseline deceleration for the front brake system.

Safety Risk

Insufficient braking performance can extend stopping distances or cause loss of vehicle control. These conditions increase crash and injury risk for riders.

FWMOTO advises owners not to operate affected vehicles and to park them outside until repairs are completed.

Affected Vehicles

The recall covers two vehicle populations produced at different intervals:

  • 2024 FWMOTO FLY-10: 500 units manufactured October 15-31, 2024
  • 2022-2024 FLY E-BIKE FLY-10: 1,335 units manufactured July 1, 2022 through June 1, 2024

Both models feature electric battery propulsion systems. FWMOTO ceased FLY-10 production in December 2024 and halted all sales of affected models in November 2025.

Component Information

The defect involves friction brake pad assemblies for front and rear brakes. Two tier-2 suppliers manufactured the affected components:

  • Ruian City Yucheng Auto Parts Co., Ltd. (Ruian City, China)
  • Zhejiang Winsafe Automotive Components Co. (Jinhua City, China)

Remedy Program

FWMOTO will provide two options at no cost to owners. The primary remedy involves replacing noncompliant brake pads with improved components featuring higher copper content. This formulation improves braking responsiveness, reduces dry surface stopping distance, and enhances wet surface performance.

For vehicles where replacement parts are unavailable, FWMOTO will repurchase the scooter. Reimbursement amounts will be calculated based on original purchase date.

Owners who previously replaced brake components at their own expense may submit receipts for reimbursement up to $25 per vehicle. Claims must be filed within six months of the notification date.

Owner Notification

Dealer notifications will be issued between February 1 and March 15, 2026. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed beginning March 15, 2026, with the phased campaign continuing through April 15, 2026.

Owners may contact FWMOTO customer service at 646-961-5177 or email [email protected]. Additional recall information is available through NHTSA Campaign Number 26V035000.
