Ford Motor Company has initiated a safety recall affecting specific models of its vehicles due to potential issues with rear brake jounce hoses. This action addresses concerns that could impact vehicle safety, prompting the company to notify owners and develop a remedy.
Key Highlights
- Affected Vehicles: The recall involves 2015-2018 Ford Edge and 2016-2018 Lincoln MKX models, totaling 499,129 units.
- Defect Description: Rear brake jounce hoses may rupture prematurely, leading to brake fluid leaks.
- Safety Risk: A leak can cause increased pedal travel and stopping distance, raising crash risk.
- Warning Signs: Drivers may notice changes in brake pedal feel, with the red brake fluid warning light illuminating.
- Remedy Status: The fix is under development, with notifications to owners expected soon.
- No Accidents Reported: Ford is unaware of any crashes or injuries related to this issue.
Affected Models and Production Details
The recall targets light vehicles classified as multipurpose passenger vehicles. For the Lincoln MKX, production dates range from November 11, 2014, to December 21, 2017, affecting 84,412 units. The Ford Edge models span June 25, 2014, to December 21, 2017, impacting 414,717 vehicles. These hoses were introduced in production during those periods and removed by December 17, 2017, following a material change from Polyvinyl Alcohol (PVA) to Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) in the inner and outer braids, which reduced failure rates.
Vehicles are not built in VIN order, so owners should check applicability by calling Ford’s toll-free line at 1-866-436-7332 or consulting a local Ford or Lincoln dealer via the Ford On-line Automotive Service Information System (OASIS) database.
Defect and Safety Concerns
The core issue involves rear brake jounce hoses that could rupture, resulting in a progressive brake fluid leak. This may lead to an increase in brake pedal travel and extended stopping distances, heightening the risk of a crash. The root cause remains under investigation, but Ford noted improvements after the braid material update.
Drivers might experience a softer brake pedal or longer travel before the red warning indicator lights up when fluid levels drop critically. The braking system features two isolated circuits, allowing stopping with half the brakes per federal standards, but the potential for reduced performance persists.
Involved Components and Supplier
The defective parts are the right rear brake hose (part number F2GC-2C339-AB/AC/AD) and left rear brake hose (part number F2GC-2C339-AB/AC/AD), described as Edge and MKX hoses. These are supplied by HC Queretaro SA de CV, a Tier 1 OEM supplier based in Queretaro, Mexico.
Investigation Chronology
Ford’s awareness began with contacts from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) regarding vehicle owner questionnaires alleging leaks. Initial reviews in 2021 identified low occurrence rates, with no trends indicating a defect. By 2024, further inquiries led to investigations by Ford’s Critical Concern Review Group (CCRG), assessing repair rates at 0.16 R/1000 and predicting a 0.12% cumulative failure probability over 10 years or 150,000 miles.
NHTSA opened a Preliminary Evaluation (PE24-027) to probe braking loss allegations. Ford provided responses and met with NHTSA, leading to reopened investigations. As of mid-2025, Ford reported 64 warranty claims, 3 field reports, and 16 customer complaints related to leaks, prompting approval of a field action by the Field Review Committee.
Remedy and Notification Plans
The remedy involves replacing the hoses and is currently under development. Owners will receive mail notifications instructing them to visit a Ford or Lincoln dealer for free repairs once available. No charge applies for this service.
Ford uses its general reimbursement plan on file for any prior related expenses. Dealer notifications are planned, followed by owner letters. VIN searches for affected vehicles will be available starting soon. This is a phased recall, with interim notifications advising on the safety risk and final remedy letters when the fix is ready.
Ford emphasizes that the braking system’s design provides redundancy, but urges owners to address the issue promptly to maintain safety.
Consumer Advisories
No “Do Not Drive” or “Park Outside” advisories are in effect. Owners should monitor for warning signs and contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332 for support. The NHTSA campaign number is 25V544000, and Ford’s recall number is 25S87.
