EBC Brakes: Pad Color Guide Explained

Discover the complete EBC Brakes pad lineup. This guide details each color-coded pad, from the daily-driving Ultimax to the track-focused SR series, helping you select the perfect brake setup.

EBC Brakes offers a comprehensive automotive brake pad range, with different colors signifying their intended use, from daily driving to competitive racing. Understanding the distinct characteristics of each pad helps vehicle owners select the optimal product for their specific performance needs and driving style. This guide provides an overview of EBC Brakes’ automotive pad range, clarifying the purpose behind each color in the lineup.

Key Highlights

  • Ultimax Pads: Designed as a direct Original Equipment (OE) replacement for daily street driving.
  • Green Stuff Pads: A performance upgrade over stock pads, also intended for daily driving.
  • Red Stuff Pads: A ceramic, low-dust option for spirited road driving and occasional track use.
  • Yellow Stuff Pads: EBC’s flagship pad, engineered for fast road performance and light track use.
  • Blue Stuff Pads: A hybrid pad suitable for heavier vehicles, fast road use, and track days.
  • RP & SR Series: Specialized non-road-legal pads designed for dedicated track and racing applications.

Ultimax Pads

The Ultimax pads serve as an OE replacement, engineered to meet or exceed the performance of stock brake pads. They feature a unique “brain coating” that allows for quick readiness after installation. Formulated without metallic compounds, these pads are notably gentle on alloys, making them an ideal choice for standard day-to-day street driving.

Green Stuff Pads

Positioned as a slight upgrade from OE pads, Green Stuff pads are also perfectly suited for daily driving. Like the Ultimax, they include a braking coating for a faster bedding-in process. The compound is free of metallic materials such as copper and lead and is slightly softer, which contributes to a longer pad life.

Red Stuff Pads

The Red Stuff pads are made from a ceramic material and are designed to be a low-dust and low-noise option. Because they contain no steel fibers, they cause minimal rotor wear and produce significantly less brake dust compared to standard OE pads. These are recommended for drivers who push their vehicles on the road or use them for occasional track days.

Yellow Stuff Pads

Considered EBC’s flagship pad, Yellow Stuff is primarily intended for fast road use. These pads are R90 approved for road legality in Europe and come with a braking coating for rapid bedding. Made with organic materials, they are kind to alloy wheels. For lighter or less powerful vehicles, they can be used on the track if they are bedded in correctly.

Blue Stuff Pads

As an upgrade from the Yellow Stuff series, the Blue Stuff pad is a true hybrid pad designed for heavier vehicles and occasional track days. It has a slightly higher friction rating than Yellow Stuff (0.52μ vs. 0.48μ) and can manage higher temperatures more effectively. The Blue Stuff pads are R90 approved for road use worldwide and are also produced from organic materials.

RP Pads (RP1 and RPX)

The RP series pads are developed specifically for entry-level racing and track days. It is important to note they are not R90 approved and are not legal for road use in the UK and Europe. The RPX is a higher friction variant (0.55μ) with an aggressive bite even from cold. In contrast, the RP1 has a slightly lower friction rating (0.45μ), offering a more progressive pedal feel and low disc wear. Both are made from semi-metallic materials for increased stopping power.

SR Range (SR11 and SR21)

The SR range represents EBC’s “sintered range” pads, manufactured in Ohio, USA. These pads are designed for higher-level racing applications that demand performance at extreme temperatures. The SR11 is a medium friction material, while the SR21 offers ultra-high friction. Known for their low cost per lap, fast bedding-in, and low noise, they are also gentle on rotors. The SR series is available for a limited selection of vehicles and aftermarket racing calipers.
