Brake Chamber Recall Affects 2,090 Units

Nova Bus (US) Inc. has announced a recall of certain ZF North America Knorr-Bremse 20/22-57 brake chambers due to a potential manufacturing defect. This issue, identified in aftermarket parts sold between October 2016 and January 2021, may cause air leaks, leading to unexpected brake engagement. Such incidents could overheat brake components, increasing the risk of fire or crashes. The recall, designated by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) as 25E027000, affects 2,090 units, with an estimated 72% potentially defective.

Key Highlights:

  • Affected Component: ZF North America Knorr-Bremse 20/22-57 brake chambers, part number K038830N00.
  • Recall Population: Aftermarket parts sold through Prevost Parts from October 14, 2016, to January 30, 2019, and December 14, 2020, to January 27, 2021.
  • Safety Risks: Air leaks may cause unintended brake application, leading to overheating, potential wheel-end fires, or increased crash risk.
  • Remedy: Nova Bus will replace defective brake chambers at no cost to owners.
  • Notification Timeline: Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed on June 13, 2025.

The defect stems from a faulty brake chamber seal design, which can compromise the integrity of the braking system. There are no prior warnings for this issue, making the recall critical for affected bus operators. Nova Bus has ensured that brake chambers manufactured after January 1, 2021, are free from this defect, and replacement parts will meet updated standards.

Owners are encouraged to contact Nova Bus customer service at 1-450-472-6410 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 for assistance. Additional information is available at www.safercar.gov. Nova Bus will cover all costs associated with the replacement, and pre-notification remedies will follow the company’s general reimbursement plan filed with NHTSA. This recall underscores the importance of addressing potential safety defects promptly to ensure the safety of bus operations.
