Bendix Commercial Vehicle Systems LLC is commemorating 20 years of the Bendix® ADB22X® air disc brake, a cornerstone of commercial vehicle safety and performance in North America. Since its debut in 2005, the ADB22X has become the most widely adopted air disc brake in its class, with over 7 million units produced. This milestone underscores Bendix’s commitment to advancing fleet safety, reliability, and efficiency.
Key Highlights
- Unmatched Adoption: Over 7 million ADB22X units produced for North America.
- Safety Leader: Delivers shorter stopping distances and reduced brake fade.
- Maintenance Efficiency: Faster pad replacements and extended service intervals.
- Versatile Applications: Used in line-haul tractors, school buses, and more.
- Enables ADAS: Supports advanced driver assistance systems with precise braking.
- Trailer Solution: ADB22X-LT enhances trailer braking performance.
Redefining Braking Standards
The Bendix® ADB22X® transformed the commercial vehicle industry by offering superior stopping power, reliability, and serviceability compared to traditional drum brakes. Its lightweight design improves fuel economy and increases payload capacity, while its consistent performance ensures smoother, safer stops. This has made it a preferred choice for fleets operating diverse vehicles, from refuse trucks to construction vehicles.
Fleets benefit from faster maintenance—pad replacements take a quarter of the time compared to drum systems—and longer service intervals due to extended friction life. These advantages reduce downtime and lower the total cost of ownership, making the ADB22X a valuable investment for fleet operators.
Enabling Advanced Safety Technologies
The ADB22X is a critical enabler of advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), such as collision mitigation and lane-keeping assistance. Its precise braking response and thermal stability ensure reliable performance in dynamic conditions, surpassing drum brake capabilities. According to Rick Conklin, Bendix’s director of engineering, “The ADB22X offers a level of responsiveness that drum brakes can’t match.”
Additionally, the brake’s low noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH) profile supports quieter, more comfortable vehicle operation, aligning with regulatory and fleet demands for reduced noise pollution.
Scaling for Industry Needs
With air disc brake adoption in Class 6-8 vehicles exceeding 50% in North America, up from 25% in 2018, Bendix has expanded its Bowling Green, Kentucky, facility to meet demand. This plant, the largest for air disc brake production in the region, reflects Bendix’s commitment to quality and accessibility. The company leverages Knorr-Bremse’s global R&D, including advanced testing labs in Germany, to ensure the ADB22X meets North America’s unique durability challenges, such as extreme temperatures and road chemicals.
Trailer-Optimized Innovation
In 2016, Bendix introduced the ADB22X-LT, a trailer-specific brake designed for lightweight performance and extended pad life. This model ensures consistent braking across entire vehicle configurations, enhancing stability and serviceability in mixed fleets. The ADB22X-LT has been widely adopted by trailer OEMs, further solidifying Bendix’s leadership in braking solutions.
Future-Ready Design
As the industry shifts toward electrified and automated vehicles, Bendix is adapting the ADB22X to support regenerative braking and advanced electronic control systems. Rigorous testing, including dynamometer evaluations and life-cycle simulations, ensures the brake remains ready for emerging technologies. “We anticipate what customers need next,” said Keith McComsey, technical sales lead at Bendix, emphasizing the brake’s ongoing evolution.
A Legacy of Trust
The Bendix® ADB22X® has set a benchmark for braking performance, safety, and reliability over the past two decades. Its widespread adoption and continuous innovation reflect Bendix’s dedication to improving transportation safety and efficiency. As the industry evolves, the ADB22X remains poised to meet future challenges, from automation to electrification.
