πŸ”₯ GM Recalls Over 62,000 Trucks for Fire Risk

General Motors (GM) has issued a safety recall for approximately 62,468 Chevrolet Silverado Medium Duty trucks due to a defect that could lead to an engine compartment fire. The recall, filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) under campaign number 25V390, affects certain 2019-2024 models. The issue stems from a faulty brake pressure sensor assembly that can leak fluid, creating a significant electrical short and fire hazard.

Key Highlights

  • Vehicles Affected: The recall includes certain 2019-2024 Chevrolet Silverado 4500HD, 5500HD, and 6500HD models.
  • The Defect: The brake pressure sensor assembly may allow brake fluid to leak onto electrical components, causing a short circuit in the brake pressure switch and its fuse.
  • The Safety Risk: A short circuit can generate excessive heat, which may result in an underhood fire. This can occur even when the vehicle is turned off and unattended.
  • The Remedy: Dealers will replace the brake pressure switch wire harness at no cost to owners. As a critical precaution, GM advises all owners to park their vehicles outdoors and away from structures until the repair is completed.

Detailed Description of the Defect

The root cause of the defect has been traced to the brake pressure sensor assembly, a component manufactured by Kodiak Controls Inc. An unauthorized chemical was used in the manufacturing of the sensor’s rubber diaphragm. Over time, this chemical can react with brake fluid, causing the diaphragm to degrade and allowing fluid to seep into the sensor’s electrical components.

This condition may be preceded by a β€œservice brake system” warning light on the instrument panel. This recall is related to a previous NHTSA campaign (23V-266) that addressed a similar fire risk but stemmed from a different root cause. Vehicles repaired under the prior recall will still need this new remedy.

Chronology of the Investigation

GM launched a new product investigation on November 24, 2024, after receiving a report of unintended brake pump activation in a 2023 Silverado that was not part of the previous recall. The investigation expanded after another report in December 2024 involved a 2021 Silverado that had already been repaired under the earlier recall.

Subsequent testing confirmed brake fluid was leaking into the wiring harness. By April 2025, an independent lab analysis determined that the diaphragm’s material was degrading due to the unauthorized chemical. GM identified 160 field reports potentially related to this issue, including one alleged fire. The company is not aware of any accidents or injuries related to this condition. Following these findings, GM’s Safety Field Action Decision Authority approved the recall on June 5, 2025.

Remedy and Notification Schedule

The solution involves replacing the existing brake pressure switch wire harness with an improved component. The new harness contains a silicone sealant that prevents brake fluid from migrating into the electrical system. This updated part was introduced into vehicle production on September 9, 2024.

Dealers were officially notified of the recall on June 12, 2025. GM plans to mail interim notification letters to owners starting July 28, 2025, with a second notice to follow once sufficient parts are available to complete the repairs. Owners can contact GM customer service at 1-866-467-9700 regarding recall number N242482680.
