Knorr-Bremse, a global leader in braking systems for rail and commercial vehicles, has secured a significant order from Siemens Mobility to equip at least 90 new suburban trains for Munich’s S-Bahn network. This collaboration not only reinforces their longstanding partnership but also marks the first time Siemens Mobility has selected Knorr-Bremse’s coupling technologies, alongside their advanced braking systems. The order aligns with Knorr-Bremse’s BOOST strategy, which focuses on expanding into innovative, high-growth technology sectors, enhancing their role as a key player in rail innovation.
Key Highlights:
- Knorr-Bremse to supply braking and coupling systems for Munich S-Bahn trains
- First-time collaboration with Siemens Mobility on coupling technologies
- Order supports Knorr-Bremse’s BOOST strategy for growth in innovative sectors
- Advanced braking technologies include quieter, eco-friendly ScrewSupply Eco compressors
- Coupling systems chosen for modularity, reliability, and cost-efficiency
- New trains to feature modern design and enhanced passenger amenities
The braking systems supplied by Knorr-Bremse include magnetic track brakes, pneumatic brake control systems, bogie equipment, and the latest ScrewSupply Eco screw-type compressors. These compressors optimize maintenance cycles and reduce noise emissions through smart components like electrically controlled fans, meeting Siemens Mobility’s demands for sustainability, energy efficiency, and lower lifecycle costs. Series delivery of the automatic couplers begins at the end of 2025, selected for their modular design, exceptional reliability, and cost-effectiveness, marking Knorr-Bremse’s entry into coupling systems with Siemens Mobility.
The new 13-car S-Bahn trains, each approximately 202 meters long, will accommodate up to 1,841 passengers, boosting Munich’s urban and regional transit capacity. Unveiled at InnoTrans 2024, they feature a striking blue and white design, replacing the former red scheme, and a modernized interior with family-friendly spaces and accessible information systems. The order also includes wiper/wash systems, building on the companies’ prior collaboration, such as with Siemens Mobility’s Mireo platform.
Valued in the mid double-digit million-euro range, this order underscores Knorr-Bremse’s leadership in rail technologies. With delivery starting in late 2028, these systems will enhance the safety, efficiency, and sustainability of Munich’s S-Bahn network.
