Knorr-Bremse VTG Secure FreightControl Sentinel Contract

Knorr-Bremse will supply VTG Rail UK with at least 2,000 FreightControl Sentinel systems by 2029 under a mid double-digit million-euro framework agreement, advancing digital monitoring of brakes and wheels in UK freight wagons.

Knorr-Bremse and VTG Rail UK have signed an exclusive framework agreement for the supply of at least 2,000 FreightControl Sentinel wagon sets through 2029. The mid double-digit million-euro contract targets digital modernization of UK rail freight fleets.

Highlights

  • Minimum 2,000 wagon sets of FreightControl Sentinel to be delivered by end-2029
  • Contract value in mid double-digit million-euro range
  • Technology forms digital core of VTG’s iWagon platform
  • Focus on real-time monitoring of wheel rotation and brake component condition

Agreement Scope

The long-term deal commits VTG Rail UK to purchasing the specified volume of FreightControl Sentinel systems. Knorr-Bremse will handle delivery, vehicle integration, and joint development of next-generation systems and digital dashboards.

The technology uses axle-mounted generators for power and applies Knorr-Bremse wheel-slide protection principles. It continuously monitors wheel rotation and brake system health, detecting potential wheel flats and component wear before damage occurs.

Operational Benefits

FreightControl Sentinel reduces wheel and rail damage, optimizes maintenance intervals, and improves fleet availability. Early adopters including Heidelberg Materials, Breedon Group, Tarmac, and Alvance British Aluminium have already placed orders for iWagons equipped with the system.

Broader Digital Freight Train Program

FreightControl Sentinel serves as a standalone module within Knorr-Bremse’s Digital Freight Train initiative. The program also includes the FreightLink digital automatic coupler and FreightControl automation system for remote coupling, uncoupling, and brake testing.

Following the UK rollout, Knorr-Bremse plans to introduce the technology in continental European markets where demand exists for data-driven fleet management and Wagon-as-a-Service models.
