Summary of the Issue

Kia America, Inc. is recalling certain 2024 EV9 models equipped with the Remote Smart Parking Assist (RSPA) feature. This system allows drivers to remotely control the vehicle’s movements using the key fob. However, due to a software error in the Integrated Electronic Brake (IEB) system, the vehicle may apply insufficient brake pressure at low speeds (around 2 mph). This malfunction can cause extended stopping distances, which raises the risk of a crash or injury to pedestrians.

Remedy and Next Steps

To fix the issue, Kia dealers will provide a free software update to correct the IEB system. The update will ensure proper brake pressure is applied during all remote parking maneuvers. Owners of the affected vehicles can expect notification letters starting on October 18, 2024. For further assistance, Kia’s customer service and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) are available.

Production Information

The recall affects EV9 models manufactured between September 25, 2023, and May 28, 2024. Kia estimates that all 12,400 of these vehicles are impacted by the defect.

Kia advises owners to check their vehicle’s recall status and schedule a service appointment as soon as they receive notification.
