Ford is recalling certain 2022 Maverick vehicles due to a safety issue involving unintended brake light illumination. The problem stems from the Antilock Brake System (ABS) module, which may cause the brake lights to light up even when the driver isn’t braking. This issue, linked to an incorrect repair under a previous recall (24V-730), could confuse other drivers and heighten the risk of a crash. Ford is addressing this noncompliance with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) 108 by offering a free fix.
Key Highlights:
- Recall Details:
- Affected Vehicles: 2022 Ford Maverick
- Issue: Brake lights illuminate without braking due to ABS module software
- Risk: Increased crash risk from driver confusion
- Remedy: Free ABS module software update at Ford or Lincoln dealers
- Owner Notification: Letters mailed starting April 25, 2025
What’s Happening?
Ford has identified that 141 vehicles from the 2022 Maverick lineup, produced between August 18, 2021, and October 6, 2022, are affected. The issue originated from a prior recall (24V-730) where the ABS module software wasn’t updated correctly, despite records indicating a successful repair. This glitch means the brake lights might turn on unexpectedly, reducing their effectiveness as a signal to other drivers. Ford notes this as a noncompliance with FMVSS 108, which sets standards for vehicle lighting and safety equipment.
Safety Concerns
The unintended illumination of brake lights poses a real danger. As Ford has described, “Unintended illumination of the stop lamps may impair their effectiveness and increase the risk of crash.” While no accidents or injuries have been reported, Ford is taking proactive steps to ensure driver safety by launching this recall, identified as NHTSA Campaign Number 25V-124 and Ford’s internal number 25C07.
The Fix
Ford dealers will update the ABS module software at no cost to owners. This update, using software package SRV0002317, corrects the flaw from the earlier repair attempt. After the update, technicians will validate the software using the Professional Technician System to ensure the fix is complete. Owners will receive notification letters starting April 25, 2025, instructing them to visit a Ford or Lincoln dealer for the service.
What Owners Should Do
Ford urges owners to act quickly once they receive their notification. For questions or assistance, they can call Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Owners who previously paid for related repairs may be eligible for reimbursement under Ford’s general reimbursement plan, filed with the NHTSA in May 2023. Additional help is available through the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 888-327-4236 (TTY 888-275-9171) or at www.nhtsa.gov.
Background and Timeline
The issue came to light on November 26, 2024, when Ford’s Critical Concern Group began reviewing incomplete software updates from prior recalls. By February 21, 2025, after an extensive audit, Ford’s Field Review Committee approved this recall. Dealers will be informed starting April 14, 2025, with owner notifications following shortly after. Ford remains committed to resolving this issue efficiently to keep its customers safe on the road.
