FMSI Sets Record Pace for 2025 Brake Applications

FMSI announces a record pace for 2025, projecting over 100 new D-numbers. The institute introduces a new subscription model for access to its industry-standard brake and clutch database.

The Friction Materials Standards Institute (FMSI) projects the release of over 100 new “D-numbers” for the 2025 calendar year. Frank Oliveto, President of FMSI, confirmed this volume of newly identified steel shapes for upcoming aftermarket applications.

Highlights

  • Over 100 new D-numbers projected for release in 2025.
  • Analysis of 500+ kits ensures distinct application verification.
  • Bi-weekly catalog updates provide first-to-market data validity.
  • New annual subscription offers streamlined database access.

Rigorous Application Analysis

By the end of 2025, FMSI expects to analyze more than 500 kits internally. Oliveto clarified that not every new OE or OES brake pad kit introduces a unique shape suitable for a new identifier.

The team conducts a thorough review of each release to verify distinct applications. Only when specific technical criteria are confirmed does the institute assign a new D-number and publish the data.

Key review factors include:

  • Slotting configurations
  • Chamfer designs
  • Hardware inclusion
  • Supersessions

Catalog Updates and Distribution

These confirmed updates are delivered through the FMSI electronic catalog. The system is updated on a bi-weekly basis.

This schedule ensures members and subscribers receive the industry’s most accurate application information. It prioritizes first-to-market data availability for manufacturers and distributors.

Expanded Access and Subscription

FMSI has introduced a streamlined, fee-based annual subscription program. This allows any interested industry professional to access the complete FMSI database.

Founded in 1948, FMSI created the standard part numbering system for brake and clutch facings. For more information about membership, subscriptions, or the catalog, please visit www.FMSI.org or email [email protected].
