SAF-HOLLAND has successfully tested its axles and safety systems at extreme temperatures of -40°C to ensure their reliability in harsh winter conditions. Conducted at the COLMIS proving ground in northern Sweden, the tests evaluated key components such as the SAF TRAKr electric trailer axle, the HOLLAND Automated Coupling (SHAC), the SAF TIRE PILOT I.Q. tire inflation system, and the HALDEX EB+ 4.0 electronic trailer braking system. These rigorous evaluations confirmed that SAF-HOLLAND’s innovations maintain performance and safety even in severe environments.
Key Highlights:
- Extreme cold testing was conducted at the COLMIS proving ground in Sweden, where vehicles faced snow, ice, and temperatures as low as -40°C.
- A truck covered over 3,000 km in 40 hours, successfully maneuvering through frozen and icy terrain.
- Testing demonstrated that mechanical and digital components maintain reliability in real-world extreme conditions, ensuring safety for fleet operators.
- Findings will directly influence future product development and improvements.
- SAF-HOLLAND leveraged synergies within its group of companies to optimize product coordination and innovation.

Cold Test Performance: Proven Safety and Reliability
SAF-HOLLAND’s SAF TRAKr electric axle, which converts kinetic energy into electrical power, performed efficiently in the extreme cold. Similarly, the SAF TIRE PILOT I.Q. tire pressure monitoring system maintained optimal trailer tire inflation, preventing failures. The HOLLAND Automated Coupling (SHAC) improved safety and convenience by enabling fully automated coupling, reducing risks of driver injuries and equipment damage.
The HALDEX EB+ 4.0 trailer braking system demonstrated its adaptability, offering modular EBS, ABS, and roll-over control functionalities. Additionally, the HALDEX ILAS-E lift axle valves and TEM Safe Parking system contributed to improved stability and operational safety, especially during hitching and unhitching.
SAF-HOLLAND’s Vice President of Research and Development, Sebastian Quick, emphasized the significance of these tests: “Safety and accident prevention are our top priority during product development. The findings from the cold test will directly influence the development and continuous improvement of our products.”
By proving their durability and functionality in sub-zero conditions, SAF-HOLLAND has reaffirmed its commitment to delivering robust and reliable commercial vehicle solutions worldwide.
