International Roadcheck: Duty Logs and Tires

The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) will conduct its annual International Roadcheck from May 13 to 15, 2025. This three-day event involves rigorous inspections of commercial motor vehicles and their drivers across Canada, Mexico, and the United States to ensure compliance with safety regulations. This year, special attention will be given to drivers’ records of duty status and the condition of vehicle tires. Inspection data will be collected and published later in the summer.

Key Highlights:

  • Special Focus: Emphasis on drivers’ records of duty status and vehicle tires.
  • Inspection Scope: Comprehensive Level I Inspections covering driver and vehicle compliance.
  • Enforcement: Out-of-service orders for critical violations; CVSA decals for compliant vehicles.
  • Education: Inspectors available to discuss tire maintenance and hours-of-service regulations.

The driver’s record of duty status (RODS) is a crucial log that tracks a commercial driver’s working hours and rest periods. Accurate RODS are essential for ensuring drivers comply with hours-of-service regulations, which prevent fatigue-related accidents. During the Roadcheck, inspectors will closely examine these logs for accuracy and completeness. Falsifying or failing to maintain proper records can lead to the driver being placed out of service.

Proper tire maintenance is vital for commercial vehicle safety. Well-maintained tires reduce the risk of blowouts and other failures that can cause accidents. Inspectors will check tires for adequate tread depth, correct inflation, and any signs of damage, such as cuts or bulges. Vehicles with tire issues may be placed out of service until the problems are resolved.

The International Roadcheck primarily involves the North American Standard Level I Inspection, a thorough 37-step process that examines both driver and vehicle compliance. This includes verifying driver documentation, licenses, and ensuring no impairment, as well as checking vehicle components like brakes, lights, and tires. Vehicles with critical violations will be placed out of service until corrections are made, while those passing without major issues may receive a CVSA decal valid for up to three months.

In cases of inclement weather or other constraints, inspectors may conduct less comprehensive Level II or Level III inspections, which do not qualify for a CVSA decal. The CVSA is a nonprofit organization committed to enhancing commercial motor vehicle safety through collaboration between enforcement agencies and the industry across North America. The data collected during the International Roadcheck provides valuable insights into compliance trends and areas needing improvement. By analyzing this information, the CVSA and its partners can develop targeted strategies to enhance road safety and reduce commercial vehicle-related incidents.
