🚨 GM Recalls Blazer EVs for Crash Risk

General Motors (GM) has issued a safety recall for approximately 40,233 Chevrolet Blazer EV vehicles from the 2024 and 2025 model years due to a defect in the rear parking brake wiring harness. The issue could lead to the unintended activation of the parking brake while driving or a complete loss of parking brake function, increasing the risk of a crash.

Key Highlights

  • Affected Vehicles: The recall includes certain 2024-2025 Chevrolet Blazer EV models. Specifically, 29,865 units from the 2024 model year and 10,368 from the 2025 model year are potentially involved.
  • The Defect: The wiring harness for the rear parking brake may be subject to damage or corrosion due to its design and routing. This can cause the wires to flex, short, or break under normal driving conditions.
  • Safety Risks: A major safety concern is the possibility of the parking brake engaging unexpectedly while the vehicle is in motion, which could lead to a crash. Additionally, if the parking brake fails to engage, the vehicle could roll away when unattended.
  • Warning Signs: Drivers might see a “service parking brake” warning light or find that the vehicle will not shift out of park.
  • The Solution: Dealers will inspect the wiring harness. If no damage is found, the harness will be rerouted and protected with anti-abrasive tape. Damaged harnesses will be replaced free of charge.

Details of the Recall

The recall, identified by NHTSA as campaign number 25V433 and by GM as N252503010, addresses a flaw in the chassis wiring harness, a component supplied by Lear Electrical Systems De Mexico. An investigation by GM, which began on May 6, 2025, found that the routing of the harness could cause wires to bend sharply, leading to damage. A review of field data uncovered 97 complaints related to this issue between August 2023 and May 2025, including two instances of rear-wheel lock-up while driving and one report of parking brake failure. GM has stated that it is not aware of any accidents or injuries related to this problem.

Affected Models and Production Dates

The recall impacts Chevrolet Blazer EVs manufactured between October 5, 2022, and January 31, 2025. Vehicles produced after January 31, 2025, were built with a redesigned, more flexible harness and are not included in this recall. It is important to note that non-EV models of the Chevrolet Blazer are not affected.

Remedy and Notification Schedule

The remedy involves rerouting the existing harness to reduce stress on the wires and applying anti-abrasive tape for added protection. If the harness is already damaged, it will be replaced. GM will begin notifying owners of the recall on August 11, 2025. Dealers were notified on June 25, 2025. Owners can check if their vehicle is included in the recall by searching the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) starting June 25, 2025. As all affected vehicles are still under warranty, a reimbursement program is not being offered.
