Daimler Trucks Recall for Brake Safety

Daimler Trucks North America, LLC (DTNA) has issued a recall for certain 2025 Freightliner and Western Star vehicles due to a brake safety concern. The problem stems from an air tank capacity that may be too small, causing reduced braking performance. This issue violates the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 121, which sets requirements for air brake systems. As a result, these trucks might need more distance to stop, potentially increasing the risk of a crash.

Key Highlights:

  • Recall Announcement: DTNA is recalling specific 2025 Freightliner and Western Star models.
  • Issue: Insufficient air tank capacity may reduce brake effectiveness.
  • Safety Risk: Longer stopping distances could heighten crash risks.
  • Affected Vehicles: 2025 Freightliner Cascadia, Business Class M2, 114SD, and Western Star 49X.
  • Remedy: A fix is in progress; owners will be notified when it’s ready.

The recall targets 68 vehicles, including the 2025 Freightliner Cascadia, Business Class M2, 114SD, and Western Star 49X models. These trucks were manufactured with air reservoir volumes below the required 12:1 ratio relative to brake chamber volume. DTNA discovered this flaw after reviewing production records, noting that a verification tool meant to flag insufficient air capacity failed to work properly.

The safety concern arises when multiple brake applications occur in a short time, potentially weakening braking power. However, a low air warning light will alert drivers before the issue worsens. DTNA is developing a solution and will mail interim notification letters to owners on July 6, 2025, outlining the risk. A follow-up notice will detail the repair once available.

Owners can contact DTNA at 1-800-547-0712 (recall number F1019) or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) at 1-888-327-4236 or nhtsa.gov for support. No accidents or injuries have been reported, and DTNA initiated this recall proactively in April 2025 after identifying the issue.
