Bosch has achieved a significant milestone in brake technology with the successful long-distance test of its hydraulic brake-by-wire system. Spanning over 3,300 kilometers across diverse climate zones, the journey showcased the reliability and potential of this innovative braking solution, which replaces the traditional mechanical connection with electrical signal lines. With plans to launch by fall 2025 and orders already secured, Bosch anticipates equipping 5.5 million vehicles with this technology by 2030.

Key Highlights:

  • Revolutionary Design: The brake-by-wire system eliminates the mechanical connection between the brake pedal and the brake system, transmitting brake requests purely via electrical signals.
  • Advanced Safety and Flexibility: Redundant hydraulic actuators and ESP® ensure safety while enabling new installation options for improved crash safety, reduced weight, and manufacturing efficiency.
  • Global Testing Success: The 3,300-kilometer test route provided critical data on the system’s performance across various traffic and climate conditions, culminating at Bosch’s winter test center in northern Sweden.
  • Market Potential: Bosch’s innovative braking solution is designed to meet the demands of highly automated vehicles and aligns with future mobility trends.
Bosch's Brake-by-Wire Arctic Success

The test journey, which began in southwestern Germany and concluded at the Arctic Circle, was conducted with approval for public roadway use, demonstrating Bosch’s commitment to safety and innovation. The system’s modular design supports seamless integration into vehicles, enabling new possibilities in vehicle interiors and manufacturing processes.

Hagen Kuckert, project manager at Bosch, praised the team’s efforts, stating, “Our hydraulic brake-by-wire system has worked perfectly on the journey…[it] impressively demonstrated that we can bring a real brake-by-wire system safely and successfully from the test track to the road.” Insights from this test will guide further development, ensuring the system meets the rigorous demands of modern and future vehicles.

Bosch’s brake-by-wire innovation represents a leap forward in automotive safety and design, paving the way for smarter, more efficient braking solutions in the coming decade.
