Baer Brakes has expanded its BIG Claw brake kits with the introduction of the BIG Claw HD, tailored for three-quarter and one-ton trucks. This bolt-on upgrade offers enhanced braking performance at a fraction of the cost of traditional big-brake kits, making it an ideal solution for owners of Ford F-250/F-350 4WD and GM 2500/3500HD 2/4WD vehicles. With kits for Ram 2500/3500 trucks slated for release in August 2024, Baer continues to deliver affordable, high-performance braking solutions.
Key Highlights
- Enhanced Braking Performance: Larger rotors improve brake torque, reducing stopping distances.
- Cost-Effective Upgrade: Priced under $1,000 per axle, ideal for fleets and individual owners.
- Easy Installation: Bolt-on design retains OE calipers, requiring no brake line modifications.
- Slotted Rotor Design: Eliminates cross-drilling to reduce thermal fatigue in heavy-duty applications.
- Compatibility: Fits most 18-inch or larger stock and aftermarket rims.
Superior Braking for Heavy-Duty Trucks
The BIG Claw HD builds on the success of the original BIG Claw kits, which have received glowing feedback for improving deceleration rates and reducing stopping distances in half-ton trucks and SUVs. According to Baer product specialist Mark Fowler, the HD version is designed for late-model, single-rear-wheel trucks, offering a seamless upgrade that retains OE calipers and pad fitment. This simplifies installation, as owners can swap rotors and pads without cracking brake lines.
The larger-than-stock rotors, averaging one inch greater in diameter, provide increased leverage and a larger heat sink, critical for trucks used in hauling or towing. Baer’s testing on a 2002 Chevrolet Suburban demonstrated the impact: with stock brakes, the vehicle stopped in 148 feet from 60 mph. Aftermarket 20-inch rims increased stopping distance by 20 feet, but the BIG Claw upgrade reduced it to 144 feet, outperforming the factory setup.
Advanced Rotor Design
Unlike the standard BIG Claw, the HD rotors feature a slotted design instead of cross-drilling. This choice enhances durability for heavy-duty applications by reducing the risk of stress cracks from overheating. The slots still allow gasses and dust to escape, ensuring consistent pad contact and pedal feel. The rotors’ curved, directional vane design boosts structural stability and acts as a centrifugal pump, improving airflow to maintain optimal brake temperatures.
Custom Caliper Brackets
To accommodate the larger rotors, Baer includes custom-cast caliper anchor brackets that relocate the OE caliper outward while maintaining OE mounting points. This ensures compatibility with OE-replacement pads, with Baer’s own BIG Claw pads in development. The rotors and brackets are zinc-plated for corrosion resistance and a polished appearance.
Versatile and Cost-Effective
Priced under $1,000 per axle, the BIG Claw HD is a budget-friendly option for daily drivers, fleet operators, and utility vehicles carrying heavy equipment. Its bolt-on installation and compatibility with most 18-inch or larger rims make it a practical choice. Owners are advised to use Baer’s free fitment templates (available at Baer’s BIG Claw page) to confirm compatibility, especially with aftermarket wheels.
Bottom Line
The Baer BIG Claw HD offers a powerful, affordable brake upgrade for heavy-duty trucks, delivering improved stopping power, thermal capacity, and driver comfort. Its innovative design and easy installation make it a standout choice for truck owners seeking performance without breaking the bank.
