Euro NCAP recently released its latest safety ratings for several car models, showcasing both excellent and underwhelming results. While the majority of vehicles, including Audi, Ford, Subaru, and XPENG, achieved five-star ratings, the Jeep Avenger, despite its accolades, only managed a three-star performance. This result raises concerns, especially for a vehicle marketed to families.
Key Highlights:
- Five-star ratings were awarded to the Audi Q6 e-tron, Ford Explorer, Subaru Crosstrek, and XPENG G6.
- Renault Symbioz and its partner model, the Captur, received a four-star rating.
- Jeep Avenger achieved a three-star safety rating, despite winning 2023 European Car of the Year and other awards.
- Issues with the Avenger included poor chest protection for child passengers and subpar performance in crash avoidance tests.
- Euro NCAP noted that Stellantis improved the forward collision warning system but pointed out a lack of ambition in overall safety features.
In Euro NCAP’s latest round of tests, Audi, Ford, Subaru, and XPENG stood out with stellar safety performances. These models demonstrated exceptional results in adult and child occupant protection, setting a high bar for competitors. The Audi Q6 e-tron, in particular, excelled in these categories, while the Renault Symbioz showed a solid but slightly lower four-star rating—a step down from its predecessor’s five stars.
Jeep’s Avenger, Stellantis’ first fully electric vehicle, captured public attention with its innovative design and eco-friendly approach, winning several prestigious awards. However, its performance in safety testing was unexpectedly disappointing. Euro NCAP criticized the vehicle for inadequate safety features, especially in areas vital to family protection, such as chest protection for children and the absence of a child presence detection system. Additionally, the Avenger’s crash avoidance systems for pedestrians, cyclists, and motorcyclists were found lacking.
Though Stellantis made some improvements following Euro NCAP’s feedback, such as updating the forward collision warning system, the overall safety performance fell short. For a vehicle targeted at families, safety should have been a priority. Euro NCAP continues to urge manufacturers like Stellantis to prioritize safety and innovation.
In contrast, the BYD SEAL-U PHEV variant achieved a five-star rating, further highlighting the gap in safety between Stellantis and other manufacturers.
Bottom Line
As competition in the automotive industry intensifies, safety remains a crucial factor for consumer trust. While Audi, Ford, Subaru, and XPENG continue to lead the way with top-tier safety ratings, Stellantis has missed the mark with the Jeep Avenger, a reminder that even award-winning cars must deliver on safety to truly earn their accolades.
