MEMA Aftermarket Suppliers is spearheading a new campaign to support the Right to Equitable and Professional Auto Industry Repair (REPAIR) Act. This legislative proposal aims to enhance access to essential vehicle repair and maintenance information, ensuring that aftermarket suppliers and independent repairers can offer safe, top-quality service alternatives to vehicle owners.

Paul McCarthy, President and CEO of MEMA Aftermarket Suppliers, expressed his support: “Across the independent aftermarket, suppliers and repairers need access to vehicle repair and maintenance information to service today’s vehicles. As explained in our new campaign, expanded vehicle data access can be accomplished safely and securely. MEMA Aftermarket Suppliers is proud to support the fight for equitable, cybersecure data-sharing practices with the bipartisan REPAIR Act, a commonsense solution that levels the playing field for aftermarket suppliers and independent repairers while protecting vehicle owners’ privacy and security.”

Key Highlights of the Campaign:

  • Broad Access: The REPAIR Act promises to dismantle current barriers imposed by vehicle manufacturers on information, tools, and software, crucial for parts integration and maintenance.
  • Cybersecurity Measures: A proposed third-party authentication system will allow trusted repair shops and suppliers access only to the necessary data, safeguarding personal information.
  • Existing Protections: Drawing parallels to systems safeguarding emails and mobile payments, the campaign reassures that the proposed measures are already protecting millions of Americans in other applications.
  • Legislative Support: With over 50 bipartisan cosponsors, the REPAIR Act received unanimous support in the House Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Innovation, Data, and Commerce.
  • Enhanced Advocacy: MEMA Aftermarket Suppliers is boosting awareness with a significant digital advertising campaign across social media, streaming services, and more.

Currently, the limitations set by vehicle manufacturers not only impede the workflow of independent aftermarket entities but also restrict vehicle owners’ choices regarding their repair options. The REPAIR Act would provide more affordable, quality options for consumers needing vehicle repairs.
