Ford Recalls 2020 Escape for Brake Issue

Ford recalls 13,451 model year 2020 Escape vehicles for potential brake performance issues that may extend stopping distance, expanding its prior 2021 recall to meet FMVSS 135 compliance.

Ford Motor Company is recalling 13,451 units of the 2020 Ford Escape due to a potential reduction in braking performance that could increase stopping distance and elevate crash risk. The recall, identified as NHTSA Campaign Number 25V693000, involves vehicles built between November 2 and December 22, 2020.

Key Takeaways

  • 13,451 Escape vehicles affected by reduced brake function
  • Issue linked to rear brake linings with low friction coefficient
  • Vehicles fail to meet FMVSS 135 for light vehicle brake systems
  • Front brake pads will be replaced free of charge
  • Owner notification letters to be mailed October 21–28, 2025

Brake System Defect and Risk

According to the NHTSA Safety Recall Report, some 2020 Escape vehicles were built with rear brake linings outside specified tolerances, combined with a brake vacuum booster lacking a vacuum sensor. In the event of booster malfunction, drivers could experience increased pedal force and extended stopping distances—failing to meet FMVSS 135 “Brake Power Assist Unit Inoperative” standards.

Cause and Affected Components

The lower-than-specified friction coefficient in the rear brake pads reduces braking efficiency. The component supplier, Continental Automotive Mexicana, produced the rear brake caliper assemblies with part numbers NX61-2D251-BNA (left) and NX61-2D250-BNA (right). Vehicles were built without the compensating vacuum sensor, which Ford later determined should have been included in the original recall scope from 2021 (21V922).

Remedy and Notification Plan

Dealers will replace the front brake linings with a higher friction design (part NZ6Z-2001-A), free of charge. Dealer notifications began October 13, 2025, and owner letters will be mailed between October 21 and 28, 2025. Owners can confirm if their vehicle is affected by checking their VIN on NHTSA.gov or contacting Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332.

Bottom Line

This expanded recall underscores Ford’s ongoing coordination with NHTSA to ensure compliance with safety standards and reinforce driver safety through improved braking performance and customer outreach.
