The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has initiated a Preliminary Evaluation to investigate complaints regarding braking issues in 2015-2017 Ford Edge vehicles. Reports allege a loss of braking ability caused by a rear brake hose failure, which could lead to increased stopping distances. The investigation aims to assess the scope and severity of the problem and its potential safety implications.

Key Highlights:

  • 36 complaints received regarding loss of braking in 2015-2017 Ford Edge vehicles.
  • Issue linked to rear brake hose failure causing increased stopping distance.
  • Alleged brake issues often occur without warning.
  • ODI aims to assess the potential safety consequences of the issue.

The Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) received 36 complaints alleging a loss of braking ability in model year 2015-2017 Ford Edge vehicles produced by Ford Motor Company. According to the complaints, the braking failure occurs while the vehicle is in motion and is attributed to a rear brake hose failure. Additionally, the braking failure often takes place without any prior warning, resulting in an increase in stopping distance.

Some of the reports also indicate previous brake repairs had been carried out prior to experiencing this failure, with some references to NHTSA Recall 20V-469. This recall dealt with issues related to brake hoses and similar components in the affected models, suggesting a potential link between the current issue and prior concerns.

ODI has opened this Preliminary Evaluation (PE24027) to determine the scope and severity of the alleged defect and to fully evaluate the potential safety-related consequences. To access the ODI reports mentioned in the opening evaluation, individuals can refer to the NHTSA.gov website for additional details.

The investigation is ongoing and aims to ensure the safety and reliability of the affected vehicles while determining the necessary steps to address the issue if a widespread defect is confirmed.
