DETROIT – Chevrolet will expand the availability of Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB) on the 2021 Silverado, offering the technology on lesser trim levels of the popular full-size pickup truck.
The least-expensive Chevrolet Silverado trim available with Automatic Emergency Braking for the 2020 model year is the LTZ 4×2 with the Safety Package II. This pickup would ring in at $46,930 after adding both the Safety Package II and the required Safety Package I – a $16,835 premium over the entry-level Chevrolet Silverado 1500 WT, which starts at $30,095.
Chevrolet was criticized for the lack of Automatic Emergency Braking in more-affordable Chevrolet Silverado trim levels in a recent article published by Consumer Reports. The automaker confirmed to the publication that it plans to expand the availability of Automatic Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Detection in the 2021 Silverado, offering the tech on less expensive trim levels.

It refrained from saying which trim levels it would be available on and how much it would cost to add it to those trucks, however, with a spokesperson only saying that it would be offered at a lower price point.
This is not the first time GM has faced questioning over how it packages active safety technology. Last year, GM CEO Mary Barra was asked why the automaker does not offer more standard active safety technology, to which she said the automaker is now working on both adding more standard safety features and offering optional equipment in lower-end trim levels.
“We have also done work to ensure that if it’s not standard, it’s available in a first package as opposed to a last package, being receptive to really giving the customer choice,” she said at the time.
The 2021 Silverado is expected to continue with only minor updates after the next-generation truck was introduced for the 2019 model year. These may include new exterior colors, slight modifications to equipment/features within the trim level structure and the introduction of new special editions models such as the 2021 Silverado 1500 Realtree Edition.
