Brembo, a global leader in high-performance braking systems, has announced the launch of a new brake caliper manufactured using an alloy of 100% recycled aluminum. This development comes after more than five years of dedicated research and represents a significant advancement in the company’s commitment to sustainable manufacturing practices. The innovative caliper is now in production for a major automotive customer.
Key Highlights
- The new caliper is produced using a 100% recycled aluminum alloy.
- This innovation reduces lifecycle CO2 emissions by an estimated 70% compared to traditional alloys.
- The transition to the new material maintains Brembo’s high standards of performance, quality, and design.
- Products made with the new material will feature a newly registered “ALU” trademark logo for visual identification.
- The sustainable caliper is already being supplied to one of the company’s major original equipment customers.

A Commitment to Sustainability
The project, which began in 2020, aimed to improve the environmental profile of Brembo’s manufacturing processes. After analyzing the full production cycle, the company focused on aluminum due to its unique ability to be recycled infinitely without any loss in quality. The research team conducted an extensive global search for an alloy that could deliver the same mechanical performance and castability as the original material while significantly lowering carbon emissions. The result is an alloy that reduces the caliper’s lifecycle CO2 emissions by 70%, a figure verified by a third-party Life Cycle Assessment study.

Innovation in Design and Manufacturing
Adopting the new material required a comprehensive redesign and update of the manufacturing process to ensure the solution could be implemented globally across all Brembo plants. Despite the change in material composition, the caliper retains the distinctive stylistic features, unique shapes, and wide range of colors for which the brand is known. Brembo refers to the material as “upcycled,” noting that the process enhances the original material to give it new and greater value. To distinguish these components, Brembo has introduced a new “ALU” trademark logo that will feature on the calipers.

The Future of Caliper Production
Brembo has confirmed that recycled material will now be the standard starting point for the majority of its new caliper developments. For calipers already in production, the company will continue to use conventional aluminum until the end of the product’s life cycle, while prioritizing aluminum produced with renewable energy where possible. This initiative aligns with the company’s strategic vision, “Turning Energy into Inspiration,” to help shape the future of mobility with sustainable solutions.
