Bendix Achieves Major Sustainability Goals in 2023

In 2023, Bendix Commercial Vehicle Systems LLC (Bendix) made significant strides towards a sustainable future, demonstrating a firm commitment to environmental stewardship across its North American facilities. With a focus on zero-waste-to-landfill certifications, reduced energy consumption, and continued recognition from the U.S. Department of Energy, Bendix has shown that economic growth and environmental responsibility can go hand in hand.

Key Highlights:

  • Expanded Zero-Waste-to-Landfill Certifications: Bendix has successfully increased its zero-waste-to-landfill certifications, marking a pivotal step in waste management and environmental conservation.
  • Reduced Energy Consumption: Through various initiatives, including solar installations, Bendix has significantly lowered its energy consumption, saving costs and reducing CO2 emissions.
  • Recognition by the U.S. Department of Energy: For the third consecutive year, Bendix’s efforts in sustainability and energy efficiency were acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Energy, further cementing its status as a leader in environmental responsibility.

Achieving Climate Strategy 2030 Targets

Bendix, alongside its parent company Knorr-Bremse, achieved a remarkable 69% reduction in scope 1 and market-based scope 2 GHG emissions by 2022, surpassing the Climate Strategy 2030 target. This success was driven by increased energy efficiency, renewable energy generation, and the procurement of green energy.

Solar Energy Success and Zero Waste Initiatives

Significant solar installations in Indiana and Mexico generated over 3.2 million kilowatt-hours of electricity in 2023, contributing to substantial energy savings and CO2 emission reductions. Moreover, Bendix’s commitment to zero waste to landfill continued to excel, with an average diversion rate of >99% in the latter half of 2023.

Employee-Driven Environmental Initiatives

Bendix’s Green Teams have played a crucial role in promoting sustainable practices both within and outside the company, organizing events like Earth Day Fairs and beach cleanups, and fostering a culture of environmental awareness.

Supporting Electric Vehicle Adoption

To encourage the use of electric vehicles (EVs), Bendix has equipped its Avon parking lot with 28 spaces featuring eight Level 2 charging stations, significantly increasing EV adoption among employees.

Continuous Environmental Commitment

Maria Gutierrez, Bendix senior director of ESG, emphasizes the company’s ongoing dedication to sustainability, stating, “We take our environmental responsibility very seriously… We continue to find ways to improve our performance and refine our strategy in line with Knorr-Bremse’s overarching ESG strategy.”

Bendix’s achievements in 2023 highlight the company’s persistent efforts to balance economic growth with environmental conservation, setting a precedent for corporate sustainability practices.
