Volvo went to four-wheel disc brakes long before most of the rest of the industry, with every Volvo 140 coming with a high-performance safety-enhancing disc stopper at each corner going back to 1966. By 1974, most Detroit cars still had drum brakes in back, and a few had fade-happy drums all the way around; this seemed to offer a good advertising opportunity for safety-centric Volvo.
