BRAKEDOWN: an ongoing collection of briefs from around the global braking industry
Tesla has started releasing an update designed to address a problem known a “Phantom Braking”. Phantom braking is a term used to describe when an advanced driver-assist system or a self-driving system applies the brakes for no good reason. The company has seen an increase in complaints about this issue, as it has continued to illude the latest updates.
The European Transport Safety Council, a not-for-profit advocacy group in Brussels, estimates that automatic braking can reduce traffic death rates by as much as 20 percent. That’s about 4,000 lives saved each year.
