Front Brake Lights Improve Intersection Safety

A new study highlights the potential safety benefits of implementing Front Brake Lights (FBLs) on vehicles, aiming to prevent accidents and reduce collision severity at intersections. These lights, mounted at the front of vehicles, activate similarly to rear brake lights, signaling other drivers about braking intentions.

Key Highlights:

  • Accident Prevention: Between 7.5% and 17% of intersection accidents could potentially be avoided with FBL.
  • Impact Reduction: Collision speeds can be significantly reduced in an additional 9% to 25.5% of accidents.
  • Visibility: Enhanced visibility of FBL could further increase potential avoidance to between 11.5% and 26.2%.
  • Reaction Times: Different reaction times (0.5s, 1.0s, and 1.5s) affect the effectiveness of FBLs, showing quicker reactions lead to better safety outcomes.

The assessment was conducted using detailed collision data from the Central Database for In-Depth Accident Study (CEDATU) in Austria, encompassing 200 analyzed intersection accidents involving passenger cars. The simulation compared scenarios with and without the use of FBL.

Safety benefits varied by accident type:

  • Straight Crossing Path (SCP) accidents had a higher visibility limitation, with 75% of cases experiencing poor FBL visibility.
  • Left Turn Across Path/Left Direction (LTAP/LD) and Left Turn Across Path/Opposite Direction (LTAP/OD) accidents showed better potential effectiveness due to higher visibility rates.

Additionally, collision speed and severity reductions were significant:

  • For minor injuries, collision speeds decreased from an average of 44.8 km/h to 28.8 km/h (with a 0.5-second reaction).
  • Severe and fatal injuries also showed notable speed reductions, suggesting the substantial impact FBLs could have on mitigating crash outcomes.

Overall, the findings underscore the promising potential of FBLs as a cost-effective, retrofittable safety measure that could significantly enhance road safety at intersections, reduce collision severity, and save lives.
