AVON, Ohio – The numbers tell a story. Start with 3.6 million. That’s how many professional truck drivers are on the job nationwide. Try 10 billion. That’s the total payload, in tons, of goods and services those drivers safely and securely transport every year. How about 70 percent? Those 10 billion tons account for 70 percent of America’s total annual freight. Another: Roughly 80 percent of U.S. communities depend solely on trucking to deliver their goods. And this: The men and women behind the wheel log over 400 billion miles every year – that’s billion with a “b,” or more than 2,100 trips to the sun and back.
The story couldn’t be clearer. America’s truck drivers perform a vital service every day, every hour. How vital? Try to imagine a world where the goods we need – from daily staples to emergency supplies – go undelivered. Yet, the contributions of these drivers often go unseen and unrecognized by the millions of people who depend on them.
