DETROIT, Mich.–Formula 1 wants to bring the costs of running teams down in 2021, and one way of doing this is by standardizing parts: Gearboxes, wheels but also brakes among other things are looking to be standardized.
Brake manufacturer Brembo has let it known that they’ll have a part in the process of standardizing the braking systems.
“Let me be clear about this,” Brembo’s Mario Almondo exclusively told Motorsport.com. “Our main reason to be involved in becoming a partner in F1 is to prove we’re better than our competitors. We’ve always had this philosophy and we’ll always keep it that way. Having said that, I think certain things could bring down the cost for an F1 team. Braking systems are a part of that.”
Brembo’s chief of performance also revealed they’ll be participating in both tenders; both for braking installations and for friction material like disks and pads.
“If there are two tenders, it is clear that we’ll be competing, but even now, in the world, Racing AP is competing with Brembo. These are facts.”
The standardizing of more and more parts is a controversial topic for some, as Formula 1 is believed to be about finding an advantage in every single aspect possible. What does Almondo, a former championship-winning operations director at Ferrari, think of this?
“I’m not saying we agree with the decision [to standardize parts], but I am saying that we have to understand that Formula 1 is trying to get an appealing image. We’re seeing Mercedes dominate now and Ferrari and Red Bull behind them. Three teams are at the top, the rest come after. As Formula 1, you have to make a decision. If you want every team to compete for wins, this is the way to go. You don’t have to agree, you only have to understand that it’s crucial.”
